Beyond Literal: Why Distinctive Visual Marks Are Essential for B2C Software Identity
For Product Managers at early-stage tech companies launching new B2C software or services who need a unique visual identity. · 4 Oct 2026
The position
I argue that prioritizing unique visual form over immediate literal communication in a core brand mark is crucial for long-term distinctiveness in B2C software.
Why it matters
For Product Managers launching new B2C software, the initial brand mark choice can determine whether a product fades into a sea of similar offerings or establishes a memorable presence that supports sustained growth.
The argument
I recognize the imperative for Product Managers to minimize friction and maximize clarity, especially when launching new B2C software. The impulse to design a brand mark that instantly communicates a product's function is understandable, aiming for immediate user comprehension. However, I believe this approach often sacrifices a more crucial long-term asset: genuine distinctiveness.
A truly distinctive core brand mark, one that prioritizes a unique visual form over literal depiction, creates a unique mental anchor for users. While it may not instantly reveal 'what it does,' it builds recognition that is tied to the product's evolving identity, rather than just its current feature set. This allows the brand to grow and pivot without its primary identifier becoming obsolete or generic, unlike marks tied to a specific, potentially transient, function.
In the crowded B2C software landscape, where features are often replicated, a unique visual identity is a powerful differentiator. It helps carve out a unique space in the user's mind, making the product memorable and fostering a sense of ownership over its category. This kind of visual equity supports user acquisition not through instant explanation, but through enduring recognition and a unique brand story that can be built over time.
What this is grounded in
My work as a Graphic Designer at Jundalo Technologies, where I apply skills in Visual Branding, Brand Identity, and Logo Design using tools like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, has shown me the practical challenges of creating marks that resonate and stand out.
What would change my mind
If research consistently showed that B2C software with highly literal and immediately understandable brand marks achieved significantly higher early adoption and sustained market differentiation compared to those with more abstract, distinctive marks.
